Three days of Swing, Blues, Jazz, and Soul in the city centre – with 100,000 expected visitors, one of the largest city festivals in the West Palatinate.
The Barbarossafest, long known by its popular nickname Swinging Lautern, has been Kaiserslautern's most musically sophisticated city festival for over two decades and is one of the most important festival dates in the entire West Palatinate in September. From September 3rd to 5th, 2026, several main stages will fill the city centre with a musical programme consistently focused on Swing, Jazz, Blues, Boogie, Soul, Salsa, and Rock'n'Roll. With around 100,000 expected visitors, the festival reaches a scale that few events in the region achieve.
The focus is on four large main stages covering the festival area: at Altenhof (traditionally for Swing and Big Band programmes), at Schillerplatz (often with a focus on Soul and Funk), in front of the Stiftskirche (in a particularly acoustically impressive location), and on the Stiftsplatz (for the larger bands). Several bands perform per stage per day, ensuring the programme is dense and continuous throughout the weekend. The distances between stages are short, allowing the audience to move freely.
In addition to the fixed stages, brass bands parade through the pedestrian zone, giving spontaneous concerts in unexpected places. Walking acts and smaller combos in bars and restaurants supplement the official programme. This ensures the festival reaches visitors who don't go directly to a stage, creating an atmosphere permeated by music.
The lineup is a mix of established regional bands from the Palatinate and Saarland, and international guests invited from France, Belgium, the Netherlands, the USA, and other countries. This international component makes Swinging Lautern unusually rich for a genre festival of this size. The detailed programme will be published in the summer of 2026.
