Special programme for families and children during the Lower Saxony summer holidays
The Lower Saxony summer holidays in 2026 run from July 2nd to August 12th. During these six weeks, the International Mill Museum will host a daily special programme tailored for families with children. Unlike normal museum days, additional activities, workshops, and tours are planned during the holidays.
Hands-on workshops are regularly held in the museum's courtyard and workshop area. Children learn about old crafts: grinding wheat with hand-operated mills, baking bread in the traditional wood-fired oven, felting, pottery, blacksmithing, or turning simple wooden objects. The workshops are led by experienced educators and craftspeople.
Special children's tours explain the mills from around the world in age-appropriate language. The stories behind the Dutch post mills, Russian wooden mills, Greek stone mills, and the Korean watermill spark curiosity and wanderlust. Children learn how wind, water, and animals were used as energy sources.
Bread is baked daily in the museum's bakehouse according to old recipes. Children can watch the dough being kneaded, shape small loaves themselves, and take them home after baking. The smell of fresh bread fills the grounds and becomes a lasting memory of the visit for many families.
With its meadows, courtyards, and paths, the museum grounds offer plenty of space for movement. Children can explore the grounds independently, look at the mills, play by the watercourses, or rest in the shade of the old trees. The museum's catering provides food for families.
Six weeks of holidays is a long time, during which parents look for attractive activities for their children. The Mill Museum has responded with a structured holiday programme that focuses on different themes daily without repetition. Families can spend a single day or come back several times during the holidays and always experience new programme items.
The concept combines education and play in an age-appropriate manner. While the children participate in workshops or follow tours, parents can explore the museum independently or relax in the museum's café. Grandparents with grandchildren also find an ideal environment at the Mill Museum for a day together.
