German-Dutch Fabric Market on Augustusplatz
Anyone who sews in Leipzig knows the date: Once a year in May, Stoffmarkt Holland spreads out across Augustusplatz, that central square in front of the Gewandhaus and the Opera. Over a hundred market stalls present current trends in fabrics and accessories: Dutch vendors dominate, complemented by German traders from the textile wholesale sector and small manufactories.
The range extends from classic cotton prints to jerseys, sweat fabrics, and knits, to specialities like cork fabric, faux leather, plush, or functional fabrics. Plus haberdashery, sewing accessories, patterns, threads, buttons – in short: everything that hobby sewers and home dressmakers usually only find online, concentrated here in one place and without shipping costs.
Stoffmarkt Holland has its roots in a Dutch market tradition where mobile fabric traders sold their goods at weekly markets. Today, Stoffmarkt Holland GmbH (based in Emsdetten, Westphalia) organises the tours through over 40 German and Dutch cities. Leipzig, as one of the few East German dates, is particularly well-attended – the central Augustusplatz with direct connections to the main train station and city centre attracts sewers from all over Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, and Thuringia.
May is the season for open-air markets in Leipzig: Augustusplatz, Marktplatz, and the weekly market are bustling, and the fabric market complements the scene for a day with a very special audience. Those who want to make the most of the selection should come for the opening – the best pieces go quickly.
As every year, the Dutch fabric traders will occupy the central Augustusplatz in front of the Opera and Gewandhaus. The range extends from cotton prints and jerseys to plush and faux leather, as well as haberdashery, patterns, and sewing accessories. Stoffmarkt Holland GmbH organises the event as part of a tour that visits over 40 German and Dutch cities each year.
