A Mile Around Wolfenbüttel's Town Moat
The Stadtgrabenlauf is one of the most unusual running formats in Lower Saxony. Instead of the usual distances of 5 km, 10 km, or half marathon, the event focuses on the English 1-mile distance – 1.609 km. The course runs along the historic town moat wall of Wolfenbüttel, the medieval fortification ring that encloses the old town and has become one of the region's most attractive urban promenades.
May Day Tradition
The run traditionally takes place on May 1st – a day when many families spontaneously look for a sporty and social activity. This is exactly where the Stadtgrabenlauf comes in: a short, easily achievable distance, a traditional setting, low entry barriers, and the prospect of a cozy get-together after the run make it one of Wolfenbüttel's most popular May 1st events.
MTV Wolfenbüttel and Laufclub BlueLiner
The organizers are MTV Wolfenbüttel e.V., founded in 1848 as one of North Germany's oldest sports clubs, and the younger Laufclub BlueLiner e.V. The collaboration combines decades of experience with modern running culture, ensuring a race that is both tradition-conscious and contemporary.
41st Edition
With its 41st edition, the Stadtgrabenlauf is in its prime: routinely organized, atmospherically well-established, yet still open to new participants. Registration is via the club's website and the race portal raceresult.com.
