Saarländischer Rundfunk operates SR 3 Saarlandwelle, the most-listened-to radio station in Saarland — and has been involved in event organization for years, particularly with family formats. One of its most successful is the SR3 Children's Festival, held annually in spring at Bostalsee: a weekend entirely for children and families, with activities, a show program, and the typical mascot atmosphere that characterizes SR children's events.

What's on Offer

On the Kleine Festwiese (Small Festival Meadow) at Bostalsee, a day of activities and games is staged over two days. The theme changes annually; in recent years, the mascot "Flossi — the Sports Ace" has been the focus, also appearing in the SR children's program landscape. The program includes:

Bostalsee — Family Festival Location

With 120 hectares of water surface, Bostalsee is the largest reservoir in southwestern Germany and the center of a developed recreational area in the St. Wendel district. With its sandy beach, surf base, pedal boat rental, circular hiking trail, and the Center Parcs Park Bostalsee directly on its shore, it is one of Saarland's most important tourist destinations. Many families combine the weekend with a camping or Center Parcs stay.

Event Series 2026 at Bostalsee

The SR3 Children's Festival is part of the event series at Bostalsee, which takes place from April to October — featuring antique and flea markets, a jazz festival, comedy night, open-air cinema, concerts, and the highlight of the big Lake Festival at the end of July. The Children's Festival is the family-oriented spring event of the series.

Atmosphere

Sunny meadow, children with rosy cheeks, mascots taking selfies, and an SR-3 moderation team guiding through the program — this is the typical atmosphere. The format is designed to be family-friendly, and admission is free. For a day trip to the water with a children's program on the Pentecost weekend, there are few better options in Saarland.
