Community Sports Festival at the Otto Lilienthal Stadium in the Aviator's Hometown
Rhinow is a town of just under 1,700 inhabitants in the Havelland district, on the edge of the Westhavelland Nature Park — one of the largest contiguous low-moor landscapes in Central Europe. Rhinow is famous as the hometown of Otto Lilienthal (1848–1896), the German aviation pioneer who made his first successful glider flights here on the Gollenberg. The Gollenberg is considered the 'Cradle of Aviation' — a memorial site and the Otto Lilienthal Museum in Anklam commemorate its historical significance. The Rhinow stadium also bears his name.
On Saturday, July 4, 2026, the annual Sportfest Rhinow will take place at the Otto Lilienthal Stadium — organized by the town of Rhinow in cooperation with local sports clubs. The Sports Festival is a classic community event format, primarily intended for the residents of Rhinow and the surrounding districts of the Amt Rhinow.
The Sports Festival typically follows a three-part structure:
The exact program for 2026 will be announced by the Rhinow sports clubs at short notice.
Behind the Sports Festival lies the active club life in rural Westhavelland. Despite its small size, Rhinow has several sports clubs — football, volleyball, table tennis, shooting sports, chess. The annual consolidation into a joint Sports Festival makes the club landscape visible and brings together families who are active in different clubs throughout the year. Such club festivals are central building blocks of community life in Brandenburg villages.
The Sports Festival is free to enter — a classic community club festival supported by the volunteer efforts of the sports clubs. Refreshments and drinks are offered by the clubs themselves, with proceeds going to the club treasuries. Anyone interested in one of Rhinow's club offerings will find a low-threshold entry point here — annual membership drives are also part of the Sports Festival.
