Seven Decades of Village History
When the Sommer-, Sport- und Parkfest begins in Kreba-Neudorf on the last weekend of July, it does so with the weight of over seven decades of tradition. SG Kreba-Neudorf e.V. has been organizing the festival since the 1950s, and even though the world has changed many times since then, the basic concept has remained stable: Four days of sports, music, dancing, and community in the park and on the sports grounds of a small municipality on the edge of the Upper Lusatian Heath and Pond Landscape. This consistency has become rare in rural Saxony, and it is the reason why the festival enjoys renown far beyond the municipal borders.
Sorbian Heritage in the Görlitz District
Kreba-Neudorf is located in the Sorbian-influenced northern part of the Görlitz district, in the region of the Upper Lusatian Heath and Pond Landscape. The Sorbian minority has shaped the village for centuries — the summer festival also bears traces of this tradition, for example in the bilingual labeling, in the traditional costumes during the parade, and in the connection to Sorbian clubs from the surrounding area. For visitors from western Saxony or further afield, the festival is therefore also an insight into the cultural identity of the region between Spreewald and the Neisse river.
Sports, Mass Gymnastics, and Music
The festival spans four days, usually starting on Thursday or Friday with sports competitions — volleyball, football, children's competitions from surrounding schools and clubs. The actual sporting highlight is the traditional mass gymnastics with around 170 participants of all generations, which has become rare in this form and has been cultivated in Kreba-Neudorf for decades. In addition, music plays a central role: dance evenings with DJs and live bands, and on Saturday, the main festival with an extensive stage program and the music-synchronized fireworks display as the finale.
Intergenerational Folk Festival
The special character of the festival lies in the mix of generations. While grandparents sit at the morning pint and drink beer, parents participate in the mass gymnastics or at the volleyball net, teenagers dance in the evening on the festival grounds, and children populate the carousel and the children's play area. This self-evidence that everyone is involved is rare in this form and makes the festival one of the most well-attended summer events in the northern Görlitz district in the state of Saxony.
