Traditional Schützenfest of the Schützenverein Wittmund (founded 1588)
The Schützenverein Wittmund was founded as early as 1588, making it one of the oldest marksmen's clubs in the entire region. More than four centuries of uninterrupted tradition have made the club a defining institution of the town. The annual Schützenfest is a central highlight of Wittmund's event calendar, combining tradition, conviviality, and sporting competition.
The Schützenfest traditionally takes place in mid-August – the exact date for 2026 will be announced by the club in spring. Historically, the date falls on the weekend around August 13th. Based on experience, the festival spans several days – from the opening on Thursday or Friday to the closing on Sunday or Monday.
The traditional king's bird shot is the centerpiece of every Schützenfest. The marksmen compete against each other to shoot the wooden bird off the shooting stand. Whoever lands the final shot and brings down the last piece of the bird is proclaimed Schützenkönig (Marksmen's King) – a title held for one year, associated with social recognition in the town.
Two of the visual highlights of the Schützenfest are the torchlight procession at dusk and the festive parade during the day. The torchlight procession brings the Schützenfest into the town center and creates a special atmosphere. The festive parade on the festival Sunday, with music bands, marksmen's uniforms, dance groups, and floats, is a colorful demonstration of club tradition.
Outside of the ceremonial program points, the beer tent program ensures conviviality. Cover bands, dance evenings, the king's dinner, Sunday morning pint, and family day form the supporting program and attract residents of all generations. The king's dinner is a special event where the marksmen's guild, dignitaries, and guests share a festive meal together.
The Schützenfest Wittmund is part of a long East Frisian tradition and has shaped the town's event life for centuries. Despite its historical roots, the festival has evolved into a family-friendly folk festival in recent decades.
