Three days of celebration by the Sögel Marksmen's Association on the second weekend of July — King's Shoot and tradition in the Hümmling 2026
Sögel is the main municipality of the eponymous Samtgemeinde and is located in the western Hümmling, a characteristic geest landscape in the northwestern Emsland region. Sögel is primarily known for the baroque Clemenswerth Hunting Lodge, built by Elector Clemens August between 1737 and 1747, and is currently a candidate for the UNESCO World Heritage list. The municipality thus combines historical heritage with a vibrant club and traditional culture, in which the marksmen's tradition plays a central role.
The 2026 Schützenfest is expected to span three days, from Saturday, July 11th to Monday, July 13th — the second weekend of July, the traditional festival period for the Sögel Marksmen's Association. Saturday marks the festive opening with the assembly of the marksmen, a parade through Sögel, and a grand marksmen's ball in the evening. Sunday is dedicated to the King's Shoot, the King's proclamation, and the King's dance. Monday concludes the festival weekend with the King's dinner and a festive closing.
The King's Shoot is also the central sporting and symbolic highlight of the Schützenfest in Sögel. During the shoot at the wooden bird, marksmen compete for the title of King. Whoever shoots off the last splinter is proclaimed King and chooses his Queen. The new King and Queen represent the Sögel Marksmen's Association for one year and participate in the festivals of the friendly Hümmling associations. The Sögel Marksmen's Association is part of the Federation of Hümmling Marksmen's Associations, which, with its own regional group, fosters the collective appearance and solidarity of the associations.
Hümmling marksmen culture is a distinct and lively tradition with numerous active associations in the municipalities of Sögel, Werlte, Lorup, Esterwegen, and the surrounding villages. The associations maintain reciprocal visits and joint activities, and the annual Sögel Schützenfest is an important date in this network.
The three days of festivities offer space for all classic program elements of an Emsland Schützenfest. The exact program schedule will be announced by the association in advance.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in the spring. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years:
