Traditional Sittensen marksmen's festival of the Sittensen Marksmen's Club e.V. — Early July at the shooting range
Sittensen is the main town of the Samtgemeinde of the same name in the northern district of Rotenburg (Wümme) and is conveniently located on the A 1 motorway between Hamburg and Bremen. The Sittensen Marksmen's Club e.V. has been a fixture in village life for generations, and its annual Schützenfest is one of the region's most important club traditions.
The sporting core consists of the bird shoot and the king's shoot. The active members compete to shoot down the wooden bird and determine the new royal court. The bird shoot often creates memorable moments when, after several attempts, the last piece falls and the new king is found.
The festive parade through the village of Sittensen is one of the most visible traditions of the Schützenfest. Marksmen in uniform, marching bands, friendly clubs, the royal court, and equestrian detachments march through the decorated streets. The local population lines the route, and many houses are adorned with small marksmen's flags.
During the festival days, the festival tent is the focal point. Dance evenings with live music or a DJ, morning pint gatherings, catering with beer, wine, and food, as well as a family program, make the festival grounds a meeting point for the entire Samtgemeinde.
The highlight is the solemn proclamation and coronation of the new monarchs. The royal court will represent the marksmen's club in the following year at events, parades, and receptions.
The Schützenfest typically spans three days on the first or second weekend of July. Tradition, sporting competition, and a Volksfest atmosphere blend together.
The highlight is the coronation of the new monarchs on Sunday. The royal court will represent the club in the following year.
