Main festival of the traditional Bürgerschützen association Salzbergen 1839 — two festival days on the second weekend of July
The founding of the Bürgerschützenverein Salzbergen in 1839 makes the association one of the oldest organizations in the municipality. The mid-19th century was a golden age for German marksmen's associations, during which numerous Bürgerschützenvereine were founded — an expression of a new civic self-awareness and the cultivation of traditional civic virtues. The Salzbergen association has kept this heritage alive for almost 200 years and remains one of the formative associations in the municipality to this day.
With seven active marksmen's associations, Salzbergen boasts an exceptionally dense marksmen's culture. From the Lemkershook association (Ascension Day) to Neumehringen (mid-June), Hummeldorf (end of June), the Bürgerschützen (second weekend of July), Steide (third weekend of July), Hubertus (second weekend of August), and another association, the list of dates spans the season. This order has evolved over generations and creates a dense, coordinated network of festivals that significantly shapes the municipality from May to August.
The main festival in 2026 extends over the weekend of July 11th and 12th. Saturday begins with the ceremonial assembly of the Bürgerschützen at the club's local pub or at the Schützenplatz, followed by the parade through the village and the opening evening in the festival tent with a grand marksmen's ball. Sunday is dedicated to the king's shooting, the proclamation of the king, the king's dinner, and the king's dance. The festival tent offers catering and a setting for members and guests to mingle.
The Bürgerschützenverein sees itself as a custodian of Salzbergen's civic tradition and maintains close contacts with the other Salzbergen associations as well as with friendly marksmen's associations in the wider Emsland region and the neighboring Münsterland. The reciprocal visits and joint activities underscore the supra-local character of the marksmen's movement.
The two festival days offer space for the classic program elements of an Emsland Schützenfest with special recognition of the Bürgerschützen tradition. The exact program schedule will be announced by the association in advance.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in the spring. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years:
