Schützenverein founded 1589 — Gathering at the Market Square on June 27, 2026, 6 PM
Few associations in Germany can look back on such a long, uninterrupted history as the Schützenverein Quakenbrück (founded 1589) e.V. With its founding year of 1589, it is one of the oldest marksmen's associations in Northern Germany. Quakenbrück, as a 'Burgmannenstadt', has cultivated marksmanship since the early modern period — a tradition that is vibrantly continued today.
The 2026 Schützenfest starts on Saturday, June 27 at 6 PM, with a ceremonial gathering at the Market Square. Marksmen, club leadership, and honored guests assemble against the historic backdrop of Quakenbrück's old town. This is followed by the classic Schützenfest program with the bird shooting, proclamation of the king, festive parade, and dance evening.
A Quakenbrück specialty is the Schnatgang: a traditional border inspection, where the marksmen walk the old municipal boundaries. In 2026, the Schnatgang takes place on May 14 at 2 PM — meeting point at the Bremer Brücke. This tradition dates back to a time when borders had to be physically traversed to anchor them in the community's memory. Today, it is an identity-forming hike with a convivial atmosphere.
The program follows the classic structure:
The marksmen's association is closely intertwined with the community of Quakenbrück. Generations of families are members, and the association's leadership bears responsibility far beyond its own activities. The marksmen's tradition sees itself as a preserver of old customs while also being a modern association with active youth work.
The 2026 edition continues the centuries-old tradition. The Schnatgang in May is a special Quakenbrück ritual.
