About Schützenfest Neuss

When the bell rings and the first shot is fired on an August Friday in Neuss, one of the world's largest Schützenfeste begins: the Neusser Bürger-Schützenfest. Over 7,000 uniformed marksmen march through the city center for four days in ten corps, a 10,000-person festival tent stands on the fairground in the Rennbahnpark, and the king's shot on Tuesday evening has been a tradition since 1823. The 2026 edition is the 200th – the largest Schützenfest in the history of the Neusser Bürger-Schützen-Verein, also embedded in the Neuss 2026 State Garden Show.

A World-Class Schützenfest

The Neusser Bürger-Schützenfest is not just regionally significant – it is considered one of the largest Schützenfeste in the world, organized by a single association. For four days at the end of August / beginning of September, the city center transforms into a stage of uniforms, festival tents, music, and rituals passed down through generations. Over 7,000 marksmen from ten corps, plus invited fife and drum corps, music associations, and riders – the overall picture of the grand parade on Sunday is a choreography rarely seen in this density.

Ten Corps, One City

The festival structure of the Neuss marksmen is clearly organized. Ten historically grown corps participate in the festival: the Sappeur-Korps, the Grenadierkorps von 1823, the Jägerkorps, the Reitercorps, the Schützenlust-Korps, the Schützenverein-Korps, and other historical associations. Each corps has its own uniforms (from the Napoleonic-looking Sappeurs to the green Jägers), its own rituals, its own music. Anyone who wants to understand the festivities should watch a parade closely.

The Four-Day Arc

The festival days follow a strict rhythm that has hardly changed for generations. Friday: festive opening with keg tapping, welcome of guest associations, and first festival evenings. Saturday: company marches, corps-internal ceremonies, and garden parties. Sunday: the Grand Parade – Germany's largest marksmen's parade, with a march through the city center and formation in front of the town hall. Monday: further festival evenings, king's balls in the corps. Tuesday: King's Shot at the bird effigy, king's reception and festive coronation in the evening. The king's shot is the emotional center of the festival.

Festival Tent & Fairground

The festival tent for 10,000 people is set up on the fairground in the Rennbahnpark. The king's balls, coronation evenings, and corps festivals take place here. In 2026, the tent – as a special solution for the State Garden Show – will remain standing from April to October and will also be used outside of the festival days. A new "Schützenhaus mit Herz" (Marksmen's House with Heart) was opened on May 13, 2026, on the State Garden Show grounds.

200 Years NBSV 1823

The 2026 edition is the 200th anniversary – a historic jubilee. The Neusser Bürger-Schützen-Verein was founded in 1823, continuing older marksmen traditions of the city. Special events, a dedicated festival badge, and an expanded program are planned for the anniversary. The Neuss 2026 State Garden Show also forms the summer framework – the first Schützenfest ever held within a State Garden Show.

Experience Neuss

The medieval Neusser Münster St. Quirin, the market square, the harbor district on the Rhine, and the Zeughaus form the urban setting. All the city's sights are within walking distance of the festival tent. For the State Garden Show season, there are also attractive park areas at the Rennbahnpark and the Stadthalle.

Schützenfest Neuss — edition 2026

The 200th Neusser Bürger-Schützenfest takes place from August 28 to September 1, 2026. Opening with keg tapping on Friday, Grand Parade through the city center on Sunday, and King's Shot at the bird effigy and coronation on Tuesday. Integrated into the Neuss 2026 State Garden Show, a new "Schützenhaus mit Herz" (Marksmen's House with Heart) opens on the grounds.

The 2026 edition is the 200th anniversary – the biggest jubilee in the history of the Neusser Bürger-Schützen-Verein since 1823. Special events, a dedicated festival badge, and closer integration with the State Garden Show characterize the program. The 10,000-person festival tent will exceptionally be in the Rennbahnpark from April to October.
