Traditional Schützenfest in a new three-day format on the border of the Weserbergland
The Lügde Schützenfest is one of the oldest and largest marksmen's festivals in the border region between Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia. The Lügde marksmen's association is deeply rooted in local identity, its members are recruited from several generations, and many families have been connected for decades. The annual Schützenfest is the social highlight of the association's life and an important community event for the entire city.
2026 marks a significant change: the Schützenfest will be celebrated for the first time over three days – Friday to Sunday – instead of the traditional four days from Friday to Monday. The shortening is a pragmatic response to changing conditions. Live orchestras, festival tent staff, volunteers, and official requirements have made the four-day format increasingly difficult to implement. With the new format, the marksmen's association aims to ensure quality, not to overburden citizens, and at the same time preserve the festival's central tradition.
The highlight of every Schützenfest is the parade of marksmen in uniform through the city, accompanied by music bands and pipe bands. Residents decorate their houses, and spectators line the streets. The king's shooting determines the new marksmen's king, whose festive proclamation and subsequent king's dinner form a particularly emotional moment of the festival. The new king is honored with the king's chain and represents the marksmen's association in the coming year.
The King's Ball is the grand dance event in the festival tent. Live bands, cover acts, or DJs provide dance music until late at night. Schlager, pop classics, party music, and waltzes alternate. The stage in the tent is usually well-lit, the dance floor is large, and the atmosphere is exuberant.
Sunday is traditionally dedicated to families. The morning program features Frühschoppen with brass music, morning shows for children, carousels, and games. Lunch is served in the tent or at the association's restaurant. In the afternoon, the festival concludes with a convivial gathering.
Although Lügde administratively belongs to the Lippe district (NRW), the connection to Bad Pyrmont and the Hamelin-Pyrmont district is very close. Many residents of Lügde work or live in Bad Pyrmont, and many residents of Pyrmont attend the Lügde Schützenfest; both cities share economic, cultural, and family ties. This interconnectedness makes the Lügde Schützenfest an important event for visitors from the Lower Saxony Weserbergland as well.
The exact daily program will be published by the Lügde marksmen's association in early summer 2026. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years, but concentrated into three days instead of four.
