Marksmen's Tradition in North Frisia
The Schützenfest (marksmen's festival) is a central date in the village year in northern Germany – deeply rooted in the local marksmen's guilds, which have been active in many Schleswig-Holstein communities since the 18th and 19th centuries. In Immenstedt, the Schützengilde Immenstedt-Hochviöl hosts its festival every year in early summer.
King's Shoot and Parade
The focus is on the Königsschießen (king's shoot): Members of the guild – both ladies and gentlemen – compete at the shooting range against the bird, a wooden eagle that is shot down piece by piece. Whoever lands the decisive shot becomes queen or king of the year and subsequently leads the parade, often accompanied by a fife and drum corps or brass band. The parade winds through the village, past the homes of the guild members, and ends in the festival tent or hall of the Hotel Immenstedt Bahnhof.
Registration in the Village
The festival is closely integrated into village life organizationally: the „Schaffer“ – volunteer organizers – go from house to house before the festival to take registrations. Those who want to compete sign up on-site; registration is also possible by phone or WhatsApp. This tradition makes the Schützenfest more than just a sporting event – it is a date for the village community.
Immenstedt in the District of Nordfriesland
Immenstedt is a small municipality in the district of Nordfriesland in the state of Schleswig-Holstein, located between Husum and Bredstedt in the administrative area of Mittleres Nordfriesland. The Schützenfest is one of the village's fixed identity dates and fits into the network of North Frisian marksmen's guilds, which are characterized by parades and shots at the shooting range in early summer.
