Groß Hehlen — Northern Celle District

Groß Hehlen is a northern district of the city of Celle that has retained its village identity despite being incorporated. The marksmen's community is one of the most important pillars of social life here. The Groß Hehlen marksmen's club (Schützenverein Groß Hehlen e.V.) hosts the annual Schützenfest, which is one of the highlights in the district's calendar.

Marksmen's Tradition in the Celle District

The Celle district and especially the city of Celle with its numerous districts maintain a particularly dense Schützenfest culture. From Groß Hehlen to Klein Hehlen and Boye/Jeversen — almost every district has its own marksmen's club with its own festival. The Celle District Marksmen's Association (Kreisschützenverband Celle) coordinates the dates so that no two neighboring festivals take place at the same time.

King's Shooting and Parade

The focus of the 2026 festival is the king's shooting competition: the new king and his court are chosen from the ranks of the marksmen. The parade on Sunday, accompanied by a marching band and friendly clubs, leads through the Groß Hehlen district. In the festival marquee, a dance evening, a ball with a dance band, and a morning pint provide the social highlights.

Festival Marquee and Marksmen's Gastronomy

The festival spans three days from August 28th to 30th, 2026. The marksmen's club operates a large festival marquee with classic marksmen's food: bratwurst, fries, draft beer, and of course, the obligatory king's schnapps. Dance bands or DJs provide a lively atmosphere in the evening; during the day, the marksmen appear in uniform.
