Traditional festival of the Schützengilde Exten with the famous Battle in the Exterfelde – Napoleonic spectacle between Eolendörper and Verts
With its annual Schützenfest, the Schützengilde Exten upholds a tradition that is second to none. While most North German Schützenfeste offer the classic triad of bird shooting, parade, and king's banquet, a unique form of spectacle has developed in Exten: the "Battle in the Exterfelde." With historically inspired uniforms, music, and a choreographed confrontation between the two camps, a piece of memory from the Napoleonic Wars era is kept alive.
The reenactment divides the festival community into two camps. The "Eolendörper" compete against the "Verts" – both names originate from the local Low German and French linguistic mix of the Napoleonic era. On the Exterfelde, a meadow area on the outskirts of the village, the confrontation is staged scenically, with the marksmen's companies providing impressive acoustic moments with their muzzle-loaders and historical salute cannons.
In addition to the battle, classic Schützenfest elements shape the weekend. On Saturday evening, the club invites you to the grand Schützenball, followed by the traditional closing ball on Monday evening. The parade on Sunday leads through the village and unites the marksmen with friendly clubs, music groups, and the village community.
In 2026, the Schützengilde Exten is a finalist in the "Pimp your Schützenfest" competition by Antenne Niedersachsen, in which Lower Saxony marksmen's clubs compete for €10,000 in funding for their club life. This nomination underscores the supra-regional significance of the festival. The exact dates for the 2026 Schützenfest are provisional; the festival usually takes place in July.
The 2026 edition continues the tradition that has made the Exten Schützenfest famous far beyond the region. With the Battle in the Exterfelde, the magnificent uniforms, and the elaborate reenactment, the festival stands out clearly from other marksmen's events.
In preparation, the Schützengilde invests a great deal of volunteer energy to organize the elaborate scenario. Members of both camps meet for months in advance for choreography rehearsals and logistical coordination.
The exact program for 2026 with start times will be published by the Schützengilde Exten in early summer 2026 on the website www.schuetzenfest-exten.de. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years: four festival days from Friday to Monday with bird shooting, Battle in the Exterfelde, two balls, and a grand parade.
