The Schützenverein für die Gemeinde Essen Oldb. e.V. is the main association of the marksmen's community in Essen (Oldenburg) — a municipality in the southern district of Cloppenburg, which is sometimes confused with the similarly named major city in NRW (hence the addition "Oldb." = Oldenburg). The annual Schützenfest is considered the social highlight of the municipality and attracts guests from the entire region.
Großer Zapfenstreich at the Old Cemetery
A special feature of the Essen Schützenfest is the Großer Zapfenstreich (Great Retreat) to open the festivities on Friday evening at 7:30 PM at the old cemetery.
