Schifferstadter Glühweinfest

The Schifferstadter Glühweinfest is part of a Palatinate tradition: before the official Christmas markets open on the first Advent weekend, many Palatinate towns host smaller mulled wine festivals to bridge the wait the weekend before. In Schifferstadt, this usually happens on the Saturday before the first Advent.

Mulled wine and winter menu

As the name suggests, mulled wine takes centre stage. Classic red, white, with or without a shot, as blueberry mulled wine or as alcohol-free children's punch. Palatinate winegrowers and local caterers serve their specialties. In addition, there is the whole repertoire of Palatinate winter cuisine: bratwurst from the charcoal grill, Flammkuchen, Spundekäs with pretzel, roasted almonds, crêpes, Reibekuchen (potato pancakes) and sweet delicacies.

Music and atmosphere

Live music, often with Advent songs, jazz standards or pop classics, sets the right mood. Schifferstadt choirs, school orchestras or regional bands provide short concert contributions. The shops in the town centre extend their opening hours and invite visitors to do their pre-Christmas shopping.

Embedding in the Schifferstadt festival calendar

Together with the Waldweihnachtsmarkt (forest Christmas market) in the Vogelpark (third Advent), the Glühweinfest forms the Christmas double pack of the Sattelstadt. Schifferstadt traditionally has a very active events calendar, including spring market, picnic concerts, Swinging Schifferstadt, Fischerfest, craft market, Oktoberfest, Obst- und Gemüsetag (fruit and vegetable day) and two Christmas offerings. The Glühweinfest is the cosiest and least formalised, a genuine neighbourhood festival in a winter setting.
