Traditional Schützenfest of the 1st Company at the Bogenstraße fairground in Algermissen
Algermissen, a municipality in the northern Hildesheim district between Hanover and Hildesheim, has a particularly vibrant shooting and festival culture. Several clubs, including the 1st Company and the Volksfest community, organize their own festivals throughout the year, each with its fixed place in the annual calendar. The Schützenfest of the 1st Company in June and the large Volksfest in August are the two most important dates.
The Schützenfest spans four days: from Thursday to Sunday. The fairground at Bogenstraße is equipped with a festival tent, shooting range, carousel, and catering stands. The program follows the classic choreography of a Lower Saxony Schützenfest: opening on Thursday, bird shooting on Friday or Saturday, king's dinner and proclamation, grand Schützen parade on Sunday.
The traditional bird shooting, where the marksmen of the 1st Company determine the new king, is at the center of attention. Whoever shoots the last remnant of the wooden bird from the pole is proclaimed the new Schützenkönig and will lead the company in the coming year. This tradition has been passed down through generations and shapes the self-image of the shooting society.
The Schützen parade on Sunday is the social highlight: the shooting company, the band, clubs, and honored guests march in uniform and traditional costume through the village, accompanied by music bands and a large crowd of spectators. Afterwards, the community gathers in and around the festival tent for a joint celebration.
In the evenings, the festival tent transforms into the central hub of the event. Dance evenings with live bands or DJs attract guests from the entire village and surrounding communities. Here too, it becomes clear that Schützenfeste in Lower Saxony are far more than just shooting competitions: they are the most important community-building events in many villages.
As in previous years, the festival is organized by the 1st Company. The exact program will be announced in spring 2026 on the municipal website and in local media.
The Schützenfest follows the traditional cornerstones of North German shooting traditions. The grand Schützen parade on Sunday is the social highlight and an attraction for the entire region.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in spring/summer. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years:
