Large medieval market around Schöningen Castle with around 300 actors, artisans, jugglers, and encampments — Free admission
Schöningen Castle dates back to a royal palace built in the 8th century. In the Middle Ages, the complex was converted into a castle, and in the early modern period, it was rebuilt into a representative palace. The multi-part complex with its moat, towers, main building, and spacious courtyard provides an ideal backdrop for medieval reenactments.
With approximately 300 participating actors, the Schöninger Schlossspektakel is one of the largest medieval markets in Southern Lower Saxony. Reenactment groups from all over Germany travel to set up camps and depict daily life in the High and Late Middle Ages.
Blacksmiths, tanners, potters, salt makers, coin mints, basket weavers, spinners, bow makers, and many other medieval artisans demonstrate their skills live. Visitors are often allowed to lend a hand, ask questions, and participate in the creation process.
A unique feature of Schöningen is the demonstration of historical salt production. The brine, which secured the town's wealth for centuries, is evaporated in reconstructed evaporation pans over an open fire. The salt produced is sold on-site.
Jugglers, fire-eaters, acrobats, musicians, and knights perform on stages and in the alleys. Demonstrations of combat, medieval music, storytelling, and dance form a varied stage program.
The medieval encampments around the castle are accessible during the day. Visitors get insights into sleeping, cooking, and workshop areas. Sutlers offer roast pieces from the spit, stick bread, mead, beer, and spiced wine. Free admission. Organizer: Verkehrsverein Schöningen e.V.
The exact program schedule, stage times, and band lineups for 2026 will be published by the organizers on sommerfest-international.de and mittelaltermarkt-info.de shortly before the event. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years:
