Traditional Pentecost Volksfest in Oppenheim with rides, showman stalls, and air shows "on land, water, and in the air"
Oppenheim, on the left bank of the Rhine south of Mainz, is known not only for its late Gothic St. Catherine's Church, its cellar labyrinth, and its classified vineyards, but also for a rich Volksfest tradition. The Oppenheimer Wäldcheskerb – a word formation from the Rhenish-Hessian dialect, referring to the original location of the festival at the edge of the forest – is the city's traditional Pentecost Volksfest.
From May 22nd to 25th, 2026 (Pentecost weekend), the festival grounds will open their gates. Four days of Volksfest with the classic repertoire: rides for young and old – from carousels for the little ones to dodgems, haunted houses, throwing stalls, and larger attractions –, showman stalls with sweets, gingerbread hearts, candied almonds, and all sorts of Volksfest specialties, raffles, and game stalls.
A special feature of the Wäldcheskerb are the program items "on land, water, and in the air". These include air shows with historic aircraft, model aircraft demonstrations, or other aviation highlights, as well as water programs on the Rhine. This expansion beyond a pure Volksfest gives the Wäldcheskerb a special character.
The culinary offerings include Rhenish-Hessian specialties: Spundekäs, Handkäs mit Musik, Bratwurst, steaks, Flammkuchen, homemade salads, fries, doughnuts, and depending on the stall, international street food options. Of course, Oppenheim wines will also be served – Riesling, Spätburgunder, Silvaner, Müller-Thurgau, Rosé, and Sekt – complemented by beer and non-alcoholic beverages.
The program includes live music with various bands and dance orchestras, DJ sets or cover bands in the evenings, a family program on Pentecost Sunday, and depending on the year, special events such as competitions or performances.
The Oppenheimer Wäldcheskerb is a Pentecost Volksfest that brings together the social life of the region once a year in a central location. Families come with children, young people meet at the rides, older generations recall the Wäldcheskerb of their youth – a Volksfest with deep roots and cross-generational appeal.
The 2026 edition follows the proven concept of the Wäldcheskerb: four festival days of Pentecost Volksfest with rides for young and old, showman stalls, wine and beer service, live music, and special highlights on land, water, and in the air.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the city of Oppenheim in due course. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years.
