Schifferstadt Street Carnival

The Schifferstadt Street Carnival is a typical example of Palatinate Carnival culture. While parades dominate in the major Rhenish carnival strongholds, the Palatinate often opts for the format of an open street party: less parade character, more open-air festival atmosphere with live music, DJs, stalls, and many people in costumes celebrating the fifth season together.

In Schifferstadt, the street carnival takes place on Carnival Sunday, February 15, 2026, starting at 1 PM, on the grounds around Schillerplatz. The central area in Schifferstadt's city center provides the spatial conditions for a large open-air event.

Twelve vendors provide the catering: food stalls with bratwurst, fries, burgers, crêpes, plus regional Palatinate specialties like Saumagen (stuffed pig's stomach), Leberknödel (liver dumplings), and of course, Palatinate wine. Drink stands offer beer, sparkling wine, wine, and non-alcoholic alternatives.

A DJ provides the musical backdrop – carnival mood music, Schlager, hits, anything that gets the dancers moving on the square. The local Schlotte Carnival Society forms the carnival core: with its active members, dance groups, and long-standing members, it shapes the festive activities.

The city of Schifferstadt regulates the street carnival with a public safety ordinance. A ban on glass is in effect on the festival grounds – drinks are served in plastic cups or other shatterproof containers. Furthermore, spirits are banned: no hard liquor may be served or brought onto the premises. This regulation serves safety and the prevention of injuries among the large number of visitors.
