Wine festival in honour of vine breeder Georg Scheu behind Alzey Town Hall
Scheu Time Alzey is a comparatively young, but already established wine festival format in the 'Volkerstadt' (city of the people). It is dedicated to the vine breeder Georg Scheu, who worked at the Reichsanstalt für Rebenzüchtung (Imperial Institute for Vine Breeding) in Alzey in the early decades of the 20th century and created the Scheurebe grape variety, which is highly valued far beyond Rheinhessen today.
The venue is the square behind Alzey Town Hall – a central, yet sheltered location that gives the festival an intimate character. The size is manageable, but the atmosphere is all the more concentrated.
In the 2026 edition, the festival runs from May 8th to 10th. The city's annual reception will take place on May 7th as a prelude. Friday, May 8th: After-work beats from 6 p.m., festive opening at 8 p.m. by Wine Queen Nicole I. and Mayor Steffen Jung, followed by a live concert by Flo & Chris. Saturday, May 9th: All-day festival operation with winegrower stands. Sunday, May 10th: Ecumenical service with Colours of Gospel from 12 p.m., followed by a Frühschoppen (morning pint) and winding down.
The Scheurebe is a white grape variety, bred in Alzey in 1916, which is a cross between Riesling and a wild vine. Today it is grown worldwide and is considered a signature grape variety with intense aromatics – cassis, blackcurrant, and tropical fruit characterize its flavour profile. With Scheu Time, Alzey honours a man and a grape variety that continue to shape the city's profile in viticulture to this day.
The festival combines civic representation (Mayor, Wine Queen), musical offerings, gastronomic culture, and religious practice (ecumenical service, Colours of Gospel) into a format that, compressed into a few days, showcases the breadth of city life.
Scheu Time 2026 takes place from Friday, May 8th, to Sunday, May 10th, in the square behind the Town Hall in Alzey. The organiser is the City of Alzey.
