Four days of traditional costume festival at the foot of the Ammergau Alps
When the costume association "Almrösl" invites you to its festival days, Saulgrub experiences four days of exceptional celebration: Brass bands march through the village, young people in traditional costume dance the "Boarischer", and older guests sit with their Maß (liter of beer) in the festival tent by the Mühlbach. From July 2nd to 5th, 2026, the Saulgrub Festival Days will take place – a classic Upper Bavarian club festival, maintained for generations in the Ammergau Alps.
Each of the four festival days has its own distinct character. Thursday begins with a star march of friendly costume associations into the festival tent and the Day of Businesses – Saulgrub entrepreneurs invite their employees to the festival evening. Friday is the party night for the younger crowd with a live band and DJ. Saturday is dedicated to the "Boarischer Tanz" with traditional folk music and a dance floor. Sunday is the main highlight: a field mass in the morning, a parade through the town in the afternoon, and a finale in the festival tent.
Behind the festival stands the mountain costume and preservation association "Almrösl" Saulgrub – a traditional Bavarian costume association with its own dance group, "Plattler" and "Schuhplattler" performers. In the Ammergau Alps, such associations are the backbone of village life: they preserve traditional costumes, folk music, the "Schuhplattler", and regional customs.
Saulgrub is located in the district of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, on the road between Oberammergau and Murnau, nestled in the foothills of the Ammergau Alps. With just under 1,500 inhabitants, it is a typical Upper Bavarian mountain village that thrives on tourism and agricultural tradition. For those hiking in the Alps during the summer, the Saulgrub Festival Days offer an authentic piece of Bavarian folk culture – far from the tourist crowds.
The 2026 Saulgrub Festival Days extend from Thursday, July 2nd, to Sunday, July 5th. The organizer is the mountain costume and preservation association "Almrösl" Saulgrub, which has been organizing the festival with great dedication for years. The meeting point is the festival grounds Am Mühlbach, a centrally located site by the stream, which traditionally maintains the festival tent atmosphere of an Upper Bavarian club festival.
As always, the festival Sunday concludes the festivities with a field mass in the morning and a grand parade through the village in the afternoon. Costume associations, music bands, and clubs from the surrounding area march through the village and then gather in the festival tent for the closing celebration.
Program subject to change. Current dates: ammergauer-alpen.de.
Festival Sunday (field mass + parade + closing celebration in the festival tent) is free admission. On other festival days, the organizer decides on admission – traditionally at moderate club prices. Food and drinks featuring Bavarian specialties and local beers are available.
