Large autumn fair at Lohmarkt and Birkenweg with rides, food, and a family-friendly Volksfest atmosphere
As the days get shorter and the first leaves fall, the Herbstmarkt opens its gates in Rotenburg. Together with the spring fair in May, it forms the two highlights of the city's Volksfest season. For three days, the festival grounds at Lohmarkt and Birkenweg transform into a colorful sea of lights with rides, stalls, and food stands.
The Herbstmarkt's offerings cater to all age groups. For the youngest visitors, there are children's carousels, trains, and small rides. Teenagers and the young at heart will find their adrenaline rush on the large rides. Throwing, shooting, and game booths offer the chance for small prizes, while food stalls provide for physical well-being with bratwurst, fries, crêpes, roasted almonds, and cotton candy.
The Herbstmarkt attracts visitors from the entire Samtgemeinde and the district of Rotenburg (Wümme). For many families, visiting is a fixed date in their autumn calendar. School classes, clubs, and regulars' tables arrange to meet on the festival grounds, which become the city's social meeting point.
The city of Rotenburg (Wümme) organizes the Herbstmarkt in cooperation with the showmen's association. Its central location at Lohmarkt and Birkenweg, just a few minutes' walk from the train station and the city center, makes visiting particularly convenient. The annual fair has a long tradition: a Herbstmarkt was already held in Rotenburg in the 19th century, originally as a Krammarkt (market for various goods), later as a pure amusement festival.
The Herbstmarkt is particularly beautiful in the evenings when the lighting of the rides and stalls bathes the festival grounds in a warm glow. The scent of mulled apples, Glühwein (mulled wine), and beer characterize the autumnal atmosphere, which is distinctly different from the summer Frühjahrsmarkt.
From Friday afternoon to Sunday evening, the festival grounds at Lohmarkt are open continuously. The evenings with lighting are, as experience shows, among the highlights of the Herbstmarkt. Food stalls offer autumnal specialties from baked apples to fries, Glühwein and beer complement the offerings.
Sunday is traditionally dedicated to families. Many showmen offer reduced prices and special offers for children on this day. Parents and grandparents use the day to explore the market with their offspring.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in late summer. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years.
