Free practical course for the correct rose pruning to start the season in the Zweibrücken Rose Garden
The correct spring pruning significantly determines a rose's blooming performance in summer. In the Zweibrücken Rose Garden, one of Europe's largest rose collections with around 50,000 bushes and over 2,000 varieties, spring pruning is one of the most important maintenance tasks of the year. On Saturday, March 28, 2026, shortly before the official season opening, the gardeners will share their knowledge with the public. For two hours, they will guide interested hobby gardeners through the beds, explain the specifics of individual rose groups, and demonstrate on living examples how to correctly prune bush, shrub, park, climbing, and English roses.
The focus of the course is on practical application. Participants will learn which tools are suitable for which roses, how to hold the secateurs correctly, at what angle the cut should be made, and how to identify diseased, thin, or crossing shoots. The question of how much wood can actually be removed without harming the plant will also be discussed in detail. The gardeners will address individual questions and provide tips that can be immediately applied in your own garden. Please bring sturdy gardening shoes and, if desired, your own rose secateurs for practical exercises.
The gardeners of the Rose Garden have decades of experience in caring for historical and modern roses. They know the peculiarities of classic varieties as well as the needs of modern cultivars, from robust ADR roses to delicate hybrid teas. In the course, they not only teach pruning techniques but also provide advice on variety selection, soil care, fertilization, and pest control, so participants go home with a comprehensive wealth of knowledge.
A few days after the pruning course, the Rose Garden officially opens its season on April 1, 2026. This marks the beginning of a period for visitors and hobby gardeners alike to witness firsthand the effect of expert pruning: in June, around 50,000 roses will be in full bloom, creating one of the most impressive natural spectacles in the region.
The course is a hands-on workshop held directly in the garden, requiring no prior theoretical knowledge. The gardeners address all questions and adapt their explanations to the participants' level. Tips on variety selection, soil care, and pest control are also included in the exchange.
In case of very bad weather, the course may be postponed. Current information at rosengarten-zweibruecken.de/events/.
