Germany's largest ancient festival — over 200 reenactors for Whitsun week in the Bramsche district of Kalkriese
Few places are as significant in European history as Kalkriese. Here, in what is now a district of Bramsche, three Roman legions under the governor Publius Quinctilius Varus were decisively defeated in 9 AD by Germanic tribes under the Cheruscan prince Arminius — a defeat that permanently halted Roman expansion in Central Europe. The Museum and Park Kalkriese has documented the archaeological finds and historical significance of this battle since 2002.
The Roman and Germanic Days traditionally take place at Whitsun. In 2026, the festival falls on May 24th and 25th (Whit Sunday and Whit Monday). Over 200 performers from all over Europe will set up their camps on the museum grounds, showcasing Roman and Germanic life in authentic reconstructions:
Concurrently, the museum is hosting the special exhibition 'Lost Warriors'. It is dedicated to the archaeologically researched fallen soldiers of the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest and presents the latest research findings. Finds, reconstructions, and multimedia presentations make the exhibition a central element of the festival.
With its size, authenticity, and the historical significance of the location, Kalkriese positions itself as Germany's largest ancient festival. Visitors from all over Europe travel for the Whitsun weekend — history enthusiasts, families, school groups, reenactors.
The 2026 edition promises over 200 reenactors and an intensive special exhibition once again — a must-attend event for history enthusiasts.
