Palatinate wine tasting aboard a historic steam train on the Neustadt — Elmstein route
The Rolling Wine Tasting with the Kuckucksbähnel is one of Germany's most unusual and romantic wine events. Aboard the historic steam train of the Lambrechter Bahn branch line — affectionately known as the „Kuckucksbähnel" — participants travel through the Elmstein Valley in the Palatinate Forest, while Palatinate vintners serve their wines in the carriages.
The Kuckucksbähnel is a living piece of Palatinate cultural heritage: a steam locomotive about 100 years old pulls authentic historic wooden carriages — many from the 1920s — along the picturesque route. The name comes from the nickname for the line, which was affectionately called „Kuckucksbähnel" due to the steep gradients and characteristic clouds of steam.
The journey starts at Platform 5 of Neustadt an der Weinstraße main station and leads through narrow Palatinate Forest valleys to Elmstein, a small village at the end of the line. During the journey, four Palatinate wineries present their wines in the carriages — an unusual, intimate tasting accompanied by the clatter and rumble of the historic railway.
Upon arrival in Elmstein, a Palatinate culinary break awaits: regional specialties complement the wine tasting before the return journey. The price of €85 per person includes: wine tasting on board, food in Elmstein, an exclusive tasting glass as a souvenir, and a reserved seat for the round trip.
Dates are strictly limited — there are only a few journeys per year. For 2026, three dates are planned in July: July 10, July 11, and July 12, 2026. Another summer date follows on August 22. Tickets regularly sell out quickly and must be booked in advance through the Neustadt Railway Museum.
This event is a insider tip for wine lovers who want to combine Palatinate enjoyment with railway nostalgia and experiencing the Palatinate Forest landscape — a unique combination only offered in Neustadt an der Weinstraße.
The three July journeys in 2026 offer the same program with an identical structure: Departure from Neustadt main station, a leisurely steam train ride through the Elmstein Valley, a stop in Elmstein, and return in the late afternoon.
The exact 2026 program with departure times and participating wineries will be published by the organizer in spring/summer. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years:
The event is part of the rich Palatinate festival culture, which attracts thousands of guests to the Neustadt an der Weinstraße region every year. The combination of wine culture, Palatinate hospitality, and established festival traditions forms the unmistakable identity of this Palatinate festival institution.
