Illumination and special events at Germany's oldest bridge during the 2026 World Heritage Festival Year
The Römerbrücke is one of Trier's most impressive technical monuments: Built in the 2nd century AD, it is the oldest still-in-use bridge in Germany. Its five Roman stone piers, which still form the bridge's structure today, are almost perfectly preserved and have withstood the Moselle's floods for almost 1900 years. Since 1986, the bridge has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Trier.
In the 2026 festival year, Trier is celebrating the 40th anniversary of the UNESCO recognition of its ancient monuments. The City of Trier and the state of Rhineland-Palatinate have announced an extensive festival program that showcases the World Heritage sites in a new light – literally: A special illumination and special events at the Römerbrücke aim to connect the historical substance with the bridge's present-day life.
According to initial announcements, a staged light show (likely illumination of the Roman piers and possibly projections) and special events in the World Heritage context are planned. The exact dates – whether it will be a single summer night or a longer illumination period – will be communicated by the City of Trier on trier-info.de and through the city's press office in due course.
Alongside the Porta Nigra, the Amphitheater, the Imperial Baths, the Thermal Baths am Viehmarkt, the Barbara Baths, the Basilica, the Cathedral, the Church of Our Lady, and the Igel Column, the Römerbrücke is among the Trier World Heritage sites that will shape the 40th-anniversary celebration in 2026.
The 2026 edition holds special significance due to its integration into the World Heritage anniversary. An lighting concept is expected to highlight the nearly 1900-year-old Roman piers, along with supplementary program elements (possibly music, guided tours, performances).
Communication will be phased throughout spring and early summer 2026.
