Open-air rock weekend in the heart of the Bergisches Land
"Rock am Markt" is Wermelskirchen's annual contribution to the open-air season in the Bergisches Land. On June 12 and 13, 2026, the central square under the Christmas tree opens up as a small open-air festival area. The event sees itself as a platform for young and regional bands: anyone making rock music in Wermelskirchen, Remscheid, Burscheid, or Hückeswagen has the chance for a big performance here.
Both evenings start at 6 p.m. and run until 11 p.m. Unlike major festivals, this is about short distances, personal contact with the musicians, and a down-to-earth festival atmosphere — where you can still chat with band members even from the second row. The stage is located directly in front of Wermelskirchen's city center, framed by the Telegrafenturm and the half-timbered facades of the old town core.
The tickets are clearly priced in the style of a community festival: 6 euros per day, or a 10 euro combo ticket for both evenings. They are sold exclusively at the box office — no online advance sale, no wristbands, no service fees. This makes the festival attractive for spontaneous visitors too: if you feel like it, just come by.
With around 35,000 inhabitants, Wermelskirchen is located in the Rheinisch-Bergisches Kreis, nestled between Cologne and Wuppertal. The town is characterized by its slate and half-timbered tradition, the nearby Eifgenbach stream, and its connection to the Bergisches Land countryside. The city center around Eich, Loches-Platz, and Telegrafenstraße has been carefully renovated in recent years and offers a characteristic backdrop for open-air events.
Wir in Wermelskirchen Marketing e.V. (WiW for short) is an association of Wermelskirchen retailers, restaurateurs, and service providers. In addition to "Rock am Markt," it curates, among other things, the Wermelskirchen Christmas market and the open Sundays. The association's office is at Telegrafenstraße 9 — just a few steps from the festival grounds.
It's only a few minutes from Burscheid station or the A1 motorway (Wermelskirchen exit) to the city center. You can find parking at Loches-Platz and the stadium at the Stadion. Be ready for anything and wear comfortable shoes — the Bergisches summer can be rainy, and the festival area is only partially covered.
