Town festival for the Summer Solstice in the Three Castles Valley
The Stadtfest zur Sonnenwende is the most important urban festival in Riedenburg, the Three Castles Town in the Lower Bavarian Altmühltal valley. Riedenburg, picturesquely nestled between Rabenstein Castle, Tachenstein Castle, and the famous Prunn Castle, invites you every year on the third Saturday in June for an all-day festival in the old town around the market square.
Throughout the entire festival, six music stages offer a diverse program — from rock, pop, and indie to brass band music, Bavarian bands, singer-songwriter sets, and DJ performances. The stages are spread across the old town: at the market square, the town hall, the parish church, the castle hill, and in the surrounding alleys. This decentralized arrangement encourages relaxed movement through the festival grounds.
In addition to music, there are art exhibitions in shops and courtyards, an extensive children's program with bouncy castles, face painting, craft activities, and interactive events, a market mile with local vendors (crafts, artisanal goods, regional food products), and a club mile where Riedenburg's clubs present their work and promote their culinary stands.
As evening approaches, the festival becomes spectacular: a professionally choreographed fire and light show with torchbearers, pyrotechnics, and musical accompaniment ushers in the night, followed by a grand fireworks display over the Altmühltal valley — the castle scenery around Riedenburg forms a unique natural backdrop for the pyro spectacle.
Riedenburg has a population of just over 6,000 and is part of the Altmühltal Nature Park. The town is a popular excursion destination — besides the three castles, attractions include the Hexenagger wildlife park, the Schiffbarmacherweg along the Altmühl river, and the famous Bavarian Jura Cave. The Solstice Town Festival is the town's biggest annual event — free of charge and equally suitable for families and guests from the region.
The 2026 Stadtfest zur Sonnenwende will be celebrated on Saturday, June 20 — the third Saturday in June and close to the astronomical summer solstice. The entire old town of Riedenburg, from the market square to the town hall, parish church, and up to the castle hill, serves as an expansive festival ground.
Six music stages with different genres, art exhibitions, an extensive children's program, and culinary club stands ensure a varied program. Late in the evening, around 11 PM, the spectacular fire and light show begins, followed by the grand solstice fireworks.
