Classic Prunksitzungen with Funkenmariechen, Büttenreden (parody speeches), and dance troupes – the peak season of Braunschweig Carnival in January and February
Braunschweig is one of the largest carnival strongholds in Northern Germany. Thousands of active carnival enthusiasts are involved in numerous clubs and committees, shaping the fifth season between November 11th and Ash Wednesday with a dense schedule of events.
The centerpiece of the season are the Prunksitzungen: large-scale stage events with classic session dramaturgy. The program includes Büttenreden with political and satirical wit, dance performances by the Funkenmariechen and dance troupes, Männerballetts, musical contributions, show dances, and appearances by nationally renowned carnival stars.
The individual clubs host their Prunksitzungen in various halls and venues throughout the city. Dates and locations are coordinated by the Braunschweig Carnival Committee. Throughout January and February, dozens of events are spread out, each with its own unique character – from classically Rhineland-influenced to more typically Northern German and reserved.
The peak season is traditionally opened with a large Carnival Celebration on the Kohlmarkt in the city center – a public open-air festival that also includes non-club members and makes the season visible. The carnival opening on the Kohlmarkt is one of the most popular urban carnival events.
The peak season of 2026 extends from the turn of the year through the session weekends to Carnival (Rose Monday February 16, 2026) and Ash Wednesday (February 18, 2026). The numerous Prunksitzungen of the Braunschweig carnival clubs are spread across this period.
The coordination of dates is handled by the Braunschweig Carnival Committee. The city's official carnival opening takes place on the Kohlmarkt.
