Poppelsdorf — Bonn's academic district
The district of Poppelsdorf is located in the Bonn district (i.e., on the left bank of the Rhine), southwest of the city center. With around 12,000 inhabitants, it is one of Bonn's more populous districts. Characteristic is the extraordinary density of students, university staff, and academically oriented families: Several faculty buildings and institutes of the University of Bonn, the Botanical Garden of the University with the Poppelsdorf Palace as an architectural highlight, and several research institutions are located here.
Clemens-August-Straße — the district's lifeline
Clemens-August-Straße is Poppelsdorf's central commercial and residential street. It connects the city center with the southern Bonn area and leads directly past the Poppelsdorf Palace (now the Faculty of Natural Sciences). Cafés, bakeries, small restaurants, bookstores, pharmacies, student boutiques, and long-established shops line the street — a typical university town atmosphere with a grown local culture.
Ortsbund Poppelsdorf as organizer
The organizer is the Ortsbund Poppelsdorf, a civil society district association that represents Poppelsdorf's interests and has been organizing the street festival for years. The Ortsbund brings together business people, association representatives, engaged citizens, and politicians of all stripes — a deliberate cross-section initiative for district culture.
Bonn — Federal City with District Culture
The Federal City of Bonn, former federal capital, has around 340,000 inhabitants and is divided into four districts: Bad Godesberg, Beuel, Bonn (city center), and Hardtberg. District festivals are a particularly strong tradition in Bonn — in addition to Poppelsdorf, Endenich, Kessenich, Beuel, Bad Godesberg, and Lannesdorf also celebrate their own annual street festivals. The Poppelsdorfer Straßenfest is one of the oldest and largest of these district events.
