About Welschenkahl-Kerwa
Welschenkahl-Kerwa — edition 2026
Festive Days Around Pentecost
In 2026, Pentecost falls on May 31. The Pfingstkerwa Welschenkahl is celebrated – as is traditional – over the preceding weekend: Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. As Welschenkahl schedules the Pfingstkerwa before the actual Pentecost weekend (scheduled for May 22–25), the festival is temporally distinct from other Upper Franconian Pentecost Kerwen, allowing for participation in multiple events.

Pentecost Kirchweih as an Upper Franconian Tradition
The Pfingstkerwa Welschenkahl is one of the numerous Pentecost Kirchweihen that have been cherished for generations in Upper Franconia. While most Franconian Kirchweihen are tied to a specific church patron saint, Pentecost Kerwen fall on a fixed date in the church year, making them reliably plannable. Welschenkahl, a district of Markt Kasendorf, upholds this tradition.
Welschenkahl and Markt Kasendorf
Welschenkahl is one of the districts of Markt Kasendorf, a market town with around 1,900 inhabitants in the Kulmbach district (Upper Franconia, Bavaria). Its location between the brewery towns of Kulmbach and Bayreuth makes Upper Franconian beer an integral part of the Kerwa culture. Welschenkahl itself is small – about 100 to 150 inhabitants – and the festival is run by volunteers from the village and the surrounding area.
Four Days of Festivities
The Pfingstkerwa classically extends over Good Friday, Holy Saturday, Easter Sunday, and Easter Monday. Each day has its own character: Friday opening, Saturday festival evening with live music, Sunday festive service and morning pint, Monday a relaxed conclusion.
