Traditional Spring Market since 1744 on the second Sunday before Easter
Few markets in Rhineland-Palatinate can look back on such a long, uninterrupted history as the Ostermarkt Schönenberg-Kübelberg. As early as 1744, even before the French Revolution and the reorganization of the Electoral Palatinate, the villages of Schönenberg and Kübelberg received market rights. The annually held market was firmly integrated into the Christian festival calendar and set for the Sunday Judica, the second Sunday before Easter. The municipality has preserved this tradition to this day: Even after incorporations, wars, and profound structural changes, the Ostermarkt takes place every year in spring.
The market extends across the central streets of the town center and combines classic market activities with the anticipation of Easter. Among the stalls, you'll find spring plants from local nurseries, Easter decorations, arts and crafts, leather goods, household items, textiles, and regional food products. Farmers and agricultural producers from the Westpfalz offer honey, eggs, smoked sausages, and seasonal vegetables. Bakeries present braided yeast breads (Hefezöpfe), Easter bread, and sweet specialties for the festival. Local gastronomy complements the offerings with spring dishes, coffee and cake, and hearty Palatinate classics.
Concurrently with the market, the shops in the town center open their doors for a Sunday with open shops. Fashion, sports, and stationery stores, the local furniture store, and small boutiques use the traditional market day to usher in the start of spring. For children, there's a small carousel, stalls with sweets, candied almonds (Mandelröstereien), and occasionally a petting zoo or pony rides. Families from the entire Kusel district and from nearby Homburg in Saarland use the Sunday as an occasion for a stroll through the town.
The Ostermarkt is more than just a commercial event: it is a living piece of Westpfalz cultural history and an important social meeting point in the community's spring calendar. Associations, local councils, and local businesses are involved in the organization, and for many older residents, the Ostermarkt evokes personal childhood memories. With its more than 280-year history, the market is part of the region's intangible cultural heritage.
With the date of March 22nd, the 2026 Ostermarkt falls at the beginning of meteorological and calendar spring. The traditional market offerings are accompanied by the impression of fresh blossoms, early spring plants, and rising temperatures. The municipality of Schönenberg-Kübelberg again expects a strong turnout, especially from families from the Kusel district and the nearby Saarpfalz district. The Sunday with open shops in the town center complements the market activities.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in spring. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years:
