Traditional spring bonfire by the Landjugend at Grumbystraße in Scholderup
The Osterfeuer is one of the oldest spring customs in Northern Germany: a large pile of wood is built up in the weeks before Easter and lit on Holy Saturday or Easter Sunday. Symbolically, the village community bids farewell to winter, leaves the darkness behind, and celebrates the start of the brighter season with mulled wine, beer, and bratwurst. In many villages in Schleswig-Holstein, the Osterfeuer is more than folklore – it's a living tradition.
In Taarstedt, a small community of around 900 inhabitants in the district of Schleswig-Flensburg, the Landjugend Taarstedt (Young Farmers' Association) takes care of the organization. The association – active since 1981 – collects firewood in the village, builds the pyre, and organizes catering and safety. Members come not only from Taarstedt but also from surrounding villages, making the Osterfeuer evening a regional meeting point for the youth.
The bonfire site is located on Grumbystraße in Scholderup – a district around Taarstedt – on an open area that allows sufficient safety distance from residential buildings and forests. In the evening, families, neighbors, and association members gather; there's grilling, conversations at beer benches, and as soon as the fire burns high enough, it becomes the emotional center of the evening.
Taarstedt is located in the Angeln region, in the district of Schleswig-Flensburg, about 12 kilometers east of Schleswig. The village belongs to the Süderbrarup office and, like many villages in the Angeln landscape, maintains an active club life. The Osterfeuer is part of the other club events, from the duck race to the summer and harvest festivals.
Landjugend Taarstedt officially announces the Osterfeuer 2026 for April 4, 2026, starting at 6:00 PM. The venue is the bonfire site at Grumbystraße / Scholderup Reinecken. The date is registered both on the Taarstedt community page and in the event calendar of the Kreislandjugend Schleswig-Flensburg.
As every year, the woodpile will be built up in the weeks before Easter on the site at Grumbystraße. On the evening of April 4, the fire will be ceremoniously lit. The Landjugend will provide catering with grill, drinks, and mulled wine.
