Traditional Easter bonfire at the DLRG boathouse on Easter Sunday
The Easter bonfire is one of the oldest and most widespread spring customs in Northern Germany. Woodpiles are built up in the week before Easter and lit on Holy Saturday or Easter Sunday evening. The custom dates back to pre-Christian roots and originally symbolized the victory of the sun and warming light over winter. With Christianization, the custom was integrated into the Easter liturgy and linked to the message of the Resurrection. In the Weserbergland, Easter bonfires remain an integral part of the Easter weekend to this day — in many places, several fires burn simultaneously, organized by clubs, fire departments, church communities, or youth groups.
The German Life Saving Association (DLRG) local chapter of Hameln has been active for many decades in water rescue, swimming instruction, and water watch on the Weser river. Their boathouse at An den Bootshäusern 7 is located directly on the river and is home to many club activities. The annual Easter bonfire is both an internal club meeting and a public event, to which members, families, residents, and interested Hameln citizens are invited.
The community gathers at the boathouse from 6 PM onwards. Woodpiles and fuel have been built up in the preceding days. As darkness falls, around 8 PM depending on the weather, the fire will be lit. Stick bread over the embers, sausages from the grill, cold drinks, and draft beer will be served. Children play on the bank, adults chat by the warming fire, and shared songs and conversations shape the atmosphere.
Like all Easter bonfires in Lower Saxony, the DLRG Hameln fire is officially registered and approved. Safety distances are maintained, the fire department is reachable, and the fuel consists exclusively of untreated wood and natural brushwood. The fire is supervised until it is completely extinguished.
The Hameln Easter bonfire by the DLRG is just one of many in the Weserbergland — the Dewezet newspaper reports each year on around 80 announced fires in the districts of Hameln-Pyrmont, Holzminden, and the Hanover region. Many families plan their Easter walk to visit several bonfires. The Easter bonfire is a living piece of Northern German traditional culture.
The fire will be lit at dusk (around 8 PM depending on the weather). The fuel consists exclusively of untreated wood and brushwood.
