Four summer nights under the open sky with children's program, live music, and films on a big screen
The Open Air Cinema by the Sea utilizes a constellation that is rare in Germany: a summer cinema directly on the Wadden Sea, with the sunset over the open North Sea as its prelude. The organizer is the Tourismus Service Norddeich, which has conceived the event as a family festival – the afternoon children's program is just as important as the evening film program.
Gastronomy opens at 1 p.m. Those who arrive early can secure their favorite spot on the meadow and spend the afternoon in a relaxed atmosphere. During the day, the stage belongs to the children: clowns perform, jugglers show their skills, magicians amaze the young audience, the classic Punch and Judy show has its turn, and a small children's disco regularly kicks things off, encouraging participation at the latest.
The film program is curated annually by a small selection committee. It is characterized by a mix of audience hits and insider tips: current blockbusters alternate with classics, and occasionally German films or European arthouse productions are shown. Great importance is placed on family-friendly programming – at least one evening per festival is suitable for older children and teenagers. The exact film selection will be published a few weeks before the festival begins.
What sets the Open Air Cinema by the Sea apart from competing events is its location and atmosphere. The Drachenwiese opens to the west, so the sunset over the Wadden Sea becomes part of the experience. Seagull calls, the distant sound of the surf, and the salty breeze accompany the enjoyment of the film. Those who have experienced the festival once know: watching films under the open sky is always nice – but by the sea, it becomes a summer experience.
The Open Air Cinema by the Sea 2026 continues the proven format of previous years. The organizer is Tourismus Service Norddeich.
