Bavarian-inspired Oktoberfest in Walkenried on German Unity Day
The Oktoberfest Walkenried translates the Bavarian Oktoberfest tradition into the South Lower Saxony Harz context. The event takes place on German Unity Day (October 3rd) and uses the public holiday for a folk festival format with a Bavarian atmosphere and North German hospitality.
Draft beer – preferably from a South German brewery – is the focus of the gastronomic presentation. Bavarian specialties are served alongside: Weißwurst with sweet mustard and pretzels, Leberkäse, roast chicken, pork knuckle, Käsespätzle, Obatzda, and sweet specialties like Kaiserschmarrn.
A live band or brass band in a Bavarian style provides the musical accompaniment. The repertoire includes classic Bavarian folk music, sing-along songs, swaying hits, and Oktoberfest classics. Integrated sing-along segments and the famous "Ein Prosit der Gemütlichkeit" actively involve the audience.
Traditional costumes (Trachten) are explicitly welcome and are part of the festival's atmosphere. Lederhosen, Dirndls, traditional shirts, and matching accessories characterize the guests' appearance. This gives the festival a visually striking traditional costume character that consistently continues the Bavarian theme.
The choice of date – October 3rd – connects the Oktoberfest with the German Unity Day holiday. This gives the event a pan-German note in addition to its Bavarian character and positions it as a date of recognition in Walkenried's event calendar.
The 2026 edition falls on Saturday, October 3, 2026, which is also German Unity Day, thus offering particularly favorable conditions for a folk festival format. The program is organized by the municipality of Walkenried in coordination with local clubs and restaurateurs.
