Two weeks of Allgäu customs, crafts, and a sense of home
The Oberstaufener Huimatwochen are a festival of home and culture lasting around two weeks in the Upper Bavarian-Swabian Allgäu region. The market town of Oberstaufen is located in the Oberallgäu district, nestled in the pre-Alpine landscape of the Bavarian state, and celebrates its connection to its own culture after the traditional Viehscheid. »Huimat« – dialect for Heimat (home) – is the programme here.
The focus is on courses and workshops where old crafts are brought back to life: Cyanotype (sun printing), soap making, grass weaving for baskets, ceramic glazing, or smoking. Participants work with their hands and learn techniques that have been practiced in the Allgäu for generations.
Folk music concerts, traditional costume dance groups, and evening events with local dance groups shape the programme, as do farmers' markets with regional products and delicacies. The Huimatmuseum »Beim Strumpfar« opens its doors for guided tours, offering insights into life in the Allgäu in the past.
The motto »Tradition, customs, and nature with all the senses« summarises what it's all about: not a show, but tangible, lived culture. The Huimatwochen immediately follow the Viehscheid and extend the most original time of the Allgäu year into autumn.
The 2026 Huimatwochen, under the motto »Autumn Sounds, Handmade Things, and a Sense of Home«, are dedicated to the living culture of the Allgäu. Over approximately two weeks, folk music concerts, craft courses ranging from cyanotype and soap making to basket weaving, farmers' markets with regional products, as well as traditional costume dancing and museum tours at the Huimatmuseum »Beim Strumpfar« are planned. The detailed daily programme will be published in advance by Oberstaufen Tourismus Marketing GmbH.
