A German-French Concert Tradition

The Nuit de la Chanson is one of the longest-running regular concert series at Kammgarn Kaiserslautern. Since its beginnings in the 1990s, the series has provided audiences with French chansons performed in their original language – an offering that meets with particular interest in a city with traditionally close ties to its French neighbor. The 80th edition on May 29, 2026, marks a small anniversary, underscoring the long-standing loyalty to this format.

Four Editions in 2026

As in previous years, the Nuit de la Chanson will take place four times in 2026: The 80th edition on Friday, May 29, opens the year. It will be followed by editions on Saturday, June 27, Saturday, August 22 (as part of the Kammgarn Kulturgarten), and Saturday, September 26. Each edition typically focuses on its own emphasis or thematic focus – sometimes French chansons from the post-war generation, sometimes contemporary performers, sometimes homages to individual great voices.

Cotton Club as Venue

The Cotton Club within the Kammgarn complex is the acoustically and atmospherically ideal space for such a format. With a manageable capacity, small tables instead of classic rows of concert chairs, and an intimate stage-audience relationship, the club creates an atmosphere conducive to the focused appreciation of a chanson program. French song literature thrives on the intelligibility of the lyrics, the facial expressions of the singer, and the dense interaction between stage and hall – conditions that are optimally met in the Cotton Club.

Repertoire and Performers

The alternating performers of the Nuit de la Chanson are mostly French or French-speaking artists, occasionally also German singers with a pronounced affinity for French chanson. The repertoire ranges from the great classics (Jacques Brel, Georges Brassens, Charles Aznavour, Édith Piaf, Léo Ferré, Serge Gainsbourg) to contemporary voices such as Bénabar, Camille, Vincent Delerm, Christophe Maé. The exact lineup for the four editions in 2026 will be announced by Kammgarn before each event.
