High-quality Bonsai show in the courtyards and gardens of Hämelschenburg Castle, a Weser Renaissance gem
The Northern German Bonsai Exhibition at Hämelschenburg Castle is among Germany's most sophisticated Bonsai shows. It brings together private collectors, Bonsai clubs, and professional artists from northern Germany and beyond. Rooted in Japanese tradition and its European interpretations, exhibitors present trees that are sometimes several decades, and occasionally over 100 years old, passed down through generations.
Hämelschenburg Castle in Emmerthal-Hämelschenburg, in the Hameln-Pyrmont district, is considered one of northern Germany's most beautiful Renaissance castles. Built between 1588 and 1613 by Jürgen von Klencke, the complex impresses with its symmetrical architecture, ornate sandstone facades, and extensive gardens. The courtyards and castle gardens are perfectly suited as a stage for the Bonsai show – the miniature trees are displayed on specially made tables, stone slabs, or wooden consoles, often framed by the historic walls.
The selection of trees includes species popular in European Bonsai tradition: pines, junipers, yews, beeches, elms, hornbeams, oaks, and lindens. Japanese classics – Acer palmatum (Japanese Maple) with red or green foliage, Japanese Black Pine, Satsuki azaleas, cherries – form another focus. Some exhibitors also bring rarities: miniature giant sequoias, olive trees, pomegranates, or figs.
Experienced Bonsai artists will be available to answer visitors' questions. Topics range from selecting a first plant to pruning techniques, wire application, and repotting, as well as special styles like Chokkan (formal upright), Moyogi (free upright), Shakan (slanted), or Bunjin (literati style). Small demonstrations and mini-workshops will also be offered at selected stands.
Several dealers will present Bonsai for sale to suit every budget, from beginner trees to high-priced solitaires. Accessories such as Japanese Bonsai tools (bud shears, wound sealers, wire cutters), substrate (Akadama, Kiryu, pumice), Yixing or Tokoname pots, aluminum and copper wire, and specialized literature will also be available for purchase.
The 2026 exhibition continues the tradition with its established format. The exact list of exhibitors and clubs will be published by Hämelschenburg Castle in the spring.
