Historic silent films at wandering Norddeich locations – Cinema as it was 100 years ago
The silent film of the 1910s and 1920s is unjustly considered a historical curiosity today. In fact, the genre experienced an artistic golden age between 1915 and 1929, during which the world's greatest filmmakers – Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton, Fritz Lang, Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau, Sergei Eisenstein – created works that remain part of the canon of film history to this day. The Norddeich Wanderkino aims to keep this heritage alive and bring it closer to today's audiences.
What makes the Norddeich Wanderkino special is its wandering format. Instead of a fixed venue, the event team moves with the projector, screen, and musicians from location to location. Possible stops include:
The title "silent film" is misleading: Films from this era were almost always accompanied by live music. In the grand cinemas of the 1920s, entire orchestras played; in smaller venues, a pianist or a small ensemble. The Norddeich Wanderkino remains true to this tradition, engaging musicians who accompany the films live – with piano, accordion, violin, sometimes also with electronic instruments and modern soundscapes, creating an interesting bridge between historical film art and contemporary music.
The film selection changes from year to year and is carefully curated by the event team. Classics of the genre regularly appear:
The 2026 Wanderkino continues the proven format. The organizer is the Norddeich Tourist Service in cooperation with film historians and musicians from the region.
The exact 2026 program (films, locations, musicians) will be published by the organizer in August 2026. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years:
