A Concert Series with a Concept
Naturklänge is one of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern's longest-running cultural series. Composer and artistic director Lutz Gerlach founded the series about 25 years ago and continues to oversee programming, artist selection, and venues. The motto says it all: 'special music in special places' – each concert takes place in a location that complements the mood of the music.
The Locations
The series traditionally opens at the Klockenhagen Open-Air Museum near Ribnitz-Damgarten. Other venues include Gutshof Hessenburg, Wieck Harbour, Dierhagen-Dorf Harbour, and the Ahrenshoop cliff edge. This geographical spread across Fischland-Darß-Zingst turns Naturklänge into a summer journey through one of the most beautiful landscapes on the Baltic Sea coast.
Musical Spectrum
The series alternates between classical music (quartets, piano recitals), jazz (trios, female vocalists), crossover (tango, Beatles in classical arrangements), and world music (Celtic, accordion worlds). The festival consciously positions itself between pop open-airs and classical concert halls, appealing to listeners seeking sophisticated music in a relaxed open-air atmosphere.
Region and Context
Fischland-Darß-Zingst – a peninsula between the Saaler Bodden and the Baltic Sea – has been known as an artists' colony since the 1880s (Ahrenshoop artists' colony). Naturklänge musically picks up on this heritage, fitting into a rich summer cultural landscape alongside the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festival and Boddenklang.
