World-class classical festival at extraordinary venues — Motto 2026: „Zwischenwelten” (In-between worlds)
The Musikfestspiele Saar are among Germany's most ambitious classical festivals — and among its most unusual. For almost two months, concerts are held at venues that are not normally concert halls: dripstone caves, castle caves, medieval churches, industrial monuments, salons, gardens. The aim: to let classical music merge with the location, not just to present music.
This year's motto „Zwischenwelten” (In-between worlds) explores „the feeling of being in between — between what was and what is to come”. A programmatic idea that finds particular resonance in a time of political and social upheaval. Musically, this translates into programs that seek transitions between styles, eras, and genres.
The festival opens on May 7, 2026, at the Saarland state representation in Berlin — a silent film concert with live saxophone and piano. The first major concert on Saarland soil features the British ensemble VOCES8, one of the world's most renowned vocal ensembles for Renaissance and early Baroque music.
The lineup for 2026 is impressive:
The venues are one of the hallmarks: the Niedaltdorf dripstone cave becomes a concert hall, organ and flute music resounds in the Homburg castle caves, the Stiftskirche St. Arnual, the Schlosskirche Saarbrücken, the Kreuzkirche Walsheim, and the Basilika Merzig spread the concert history across the entire Saarland.
A special program strand is called „MITWELTEN” (With Worlds) and addresses social issues: concerts in nursing homes, correctional facilities, and special needs schools. This is a consequence of the Musikfestspiele Saar's intention to understand classical music not just as an elite art form.
A programmatic highlight is the three-concert series „Weimarer Orchesterdreieck” (Weimar Orchestra Triangle) — a homage to Weimar Classicism with three thematically linked concerts in various halls across Saarland. The Fête de la Musique on June 21, 2026, and several wine hikes with accompanying music are also part of the program.
The festival concludes on June 28, 2026, at the St. Michael Church Saarbrücken with the British Tenebrae Choir, one of the most renowned Renaissance choirs of our time. A concert that brings the seven-week journey to a climax.
The 2026 edition runs from May 7 to June 28, 2026 — seven weeks of classical and crossover music at extraordinary venues across Saarland. The organizer is Internationale Musikfestspiele Saar gGmbH.
The motto „Zwischenwelten” (In-between worlds) explores musical transitions between eras, styles, and genres — programmatically fitting for a time of societal transformation.
