Open Day at the German Shoe Museum – Special Exhibition Football Magic as the framework for the 2026 Summer Museum Festival
The German Shoe Museum Hauenstein is one of the central museums in the Westpfalz region and is dedicated to the heritage of the shoe industry, which shaped the region's economy for over 100 years. Hauenstein was a stronghold of German shoemaking well into the 20th century, with dozens of shoe factories and several thousand jobs. The museum documents this history with an extensive collection of historical shoes, machines, workshops, and life stories of the shoemakers.
The annual Museumsfest is an open day that opens the museum to a broad audience and offers special programs centered around the current special exhibition. In 2026, the festival coincides with the special exhibition Football Magic, which runs from March to October 2026. This exhibition explores the world of football from the perspective of footwear: from the leather shoes of the pioneering era and the first studded boots to the high-tech sneaker culture of today, complemented by exhibits on club history, fan culture, and iconic game moments.
Admission to the Museumsfest is free. The program typically includes guided tours of the permanent and special exhibitions, live demonstrations of shoemaking techniques, hands-on activities for children and families, and catering services in the museum's vicinity. The Museumsfest is closely linked to the large Schuhmachermarkt (Shoemakers' Market), which celebrates 140 years of the shoe industry in Hauenstein two weeks earlier, from May 29–31, 2026.
Hauenstein, with just under 3,800 inhabitants, is the administrative seat of the Verbandsgemeinde of the same name. The shoe industry had been the dominant economic sector here since the 1880s; even after the industry's decline from the 1980s onwards, the town's identity remains closely linked to footwear. The German Shoe Museum is one of the most important sites commemorating this history and is also a tourist attraction.
The 2026 edition uses the special exhibition Football Magic as its thematic framework. The exact program for 2026 will be published by the museum in the spring. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years.
