A symbol against xenophobia since 1994
The Multicultural Friendship Festival was launched in 1994 — at a time when German civil society was seeking answers to xenophobia following the attacks in Mölln and Solingen. Pirmasens has developed its own response with the Friendship Festival: a public celebration that makes the city's cultural diversity visible and celebrates it. With its 31st edition in 2026, the festival stands for remarkable continuity.
The festival is supported by the migrant associations and communities living and working in Pirmasens. Italians, Turks, Spaniards, Portuguese, Bulgarians, Romanians, Syrians, Iraqis, Afghans, and many other nationalities shape the city's society. They all contribute their culture — with music, dance, costumes, and above all, culinary specialties that make the festival an international journey of taste.
Schlossplatz in the heart of the city center has been the venue for years. With its central location and size, it offers space for a stage, stalls, and interaction. During the festival, the square transforms into an international market, bringing the world to Pirmasens with its scents, sounds, and colors.
Music and dance groups from various communities perform on stage. The culinary diversity — from Turkish Lahmacun to Italian pizza, Spanish tortilla, Syrian falafel, Afghan rice, and much more — is one of the main attractions. The festival thus combines a political statement with tangible enjoyment in an event that has been reliably successful for three decades.
The 2026 edition continues an unusually long tradition. 31 years of the Multicultural Friendship Festival — this is a consistency rarely found in the German festival landscape, and one that Pirmasens can rightly be proud of.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in the summer. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years: festival opening at noon, performances by music and dance groups from various communities, continuous stall operation with culinary delights from around the world, and closing in the late afternoon.
Detailed program information with participating associations and their contributions will be communicated by the City of Pirmasens.
