Palatinate Kerwe in Münchweiler an der Rodalb with four days of festivities
Münchweiler an der Rodalb is located in the southern Pfälzerwald, in the Rodalb valley, directly on the A62 motorway. With around 3,000 inhabitants, it is one of the medium-sized municipalities in the Südwestpfalz district, characterized by an active club culture and nestled in a wooded landscape. The Kerwe – the annual Kirchweih – is the social highlight of the village year and one of the most important dates in the local calendar.
The Kerwe (Kirchweih) is one of the central Volksfeste (public festivals) of the Palatinate region. Originally commemorating the consecration day of the village church, it has evolved into a multi-day festival that mobilizes the entire village community. Starting on Friday, the main festival day with dancing on Saturday, Frühschoppen (morning pint) and Kerwe parade on Sunday, and a convivial closing on Monday – this structure follows a fixed pattern celebrated in almost every Palatinate community.
A true Palatinate Kerwe is incomplete without the Kerweredd. The Kerweredd is a humorous and satirical festive speech in the Palatinate dialect, delivered on Sunday after the Frühschoppen. It takes aim at the events of the past village year: the mayor, club chairmen, mishaps, scandals, romances – nothing is safe from the sharp wit of the Kerweredder (speaker). This custom is both tradition and a social corrective, an indispensable part of Palatinate festival culture.
Like all Palatinate Kerwen, the Münchweiler Kerwe is supported by local clubs. The fire department, sports club, music club, Kerwe youth – everyone has their role. The catering follows Palatinate tradition: Saumagen (pig's stomach stuffed with pork and potatoes), Leberknödel (liver dumplings), Bratwurst (fried sausage), Flammkuchen (thin tart with cream, onions, and bacon), Wurstsalat (sausage salad), Palatinate wine, draft beer. The proceeds flow back into the clubs' activities.
The highlight of Saturday evening is the dance event. A cover band or dance orchestra plays, and the dance floor fills up. The musical spectrum ranges from Schlager (pop music) and waltzes to dialect songs and current hits. On Sunday, brass music accompanies the Frühschoppen, and regional live music complements the Kerwe program in the afternoon.
The Kerwe is organized by the local municipality of Münchweiler an der Rodalb with the support of local clubs. Current program details can be found in the pfalz.de event calendar.
The exact 2026 program will be published by the organizer in early summer. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years.
