Atmospheric Advent market on four Advent weekends in the historic Mill Museum
The Mühlenweihnacht spans all four Advent weekends, making it one of the longest Advent markets in the region. For many families from Gifhorn, Wolfsburg, Braunschweig, and the Lüneburg Heath, a visit to the Mill Museum is a firm part of the pre-Christmas season. The backdrop of mills collected from around the world, historic farm buildings, and the small wooden church makes the market unmistakable.
The illumination of the grounds is the centerpiece of the Mühlenweihnacht. The half-timbered mills, the small church, and the historic courtyards are lit with warm lights, fairy lights stretch across the central village square, and fir trees and festive decorations complete the picture. As dusk falls over the grounds, a special atmosphere is created, which many visitors consider the highlight of the market.
Mulled wine in several variations – classic, white, non-alcoholic for children – potato pancakes with apple sauce, roast game sandwiches, bratwurst, baked goods, and winter sweets are part of the gastronomic offerings. The museum's bread house bakes and sells Christmas pastries and fresh bread during the market. A campfire in the central square invites visitors to warm up.
Craft workshops are prepared for children in the courtyard and workshop areas. Young visitors can create Christmas cards, straw stars, decorate gingerbread, and make small wooden crafts under guidance. Mill demonstrations also take place during the Mühlenweihnacht – an additional experience for families.
At selected stalls, manufactories, artisans, and direct marketers offer their products: ceramics, woodwork, jewelry, natural cosmetics, honey, liqueurs, and other Christmas gift ideas. The market is deliberately kept manageable and quality-oriented, far from the interchangeable mass-produced goods of many big-city Christmas markets.
The Mühlenweihnacht is one of the longest and most atmospheric Advent events in Lower Saxony. Over four weekends, the Mill Museum becomes a meeting point for families from Gifhorn, Wolfsburg, Braunschweig, and the surrounding region. The illumination of the half-timbered mills and farm buildings begins at dusk, making the late afternoon the most atmospheric time to visit.
The program includes gastronomic offerings, sales stands from selected manufactories, craft workshops for children, mill demonstrations, and a campfire in the central square. Traditional Christmas baked goods are baked and sold in the bread house. The small wooden church hosts services and concerts on select weekends.
